Superhero stories have long been dominated by the male heroes and villains – Superman and Lex Luthor, Batman and the Joker. Even the majority of the Avengers are male, although Marvel are doing a good job of getting fans to see the strength and value in characters like Black Widow, Maria Hill and other supporting roles. Over in the DC universe, women are gaining popularity thanks to new reboots for Catwoman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman and especially Harley Quinn. This means that there is a whole new set of characters to enjoy and new storylines. The storylines here are less about the movies and more about girly fun – as is clear in the creation of the high-school and the designs of the doll like figures. These heroes and villains have a lot of worth and there are some great new LEGO DC Super Hero Girls sets that prove this.

LEGO DC Super Hero Girls 41232 Super Hero High School Set
The first set to look at here is the impressive LEGO DC Super Hero Girls 41232 Super Hero High School. This three storey building takes the stories and action into an entirely new direction and makes the characters more relate-able for the pre-teen age group it is aimed at. This is not a dark battle of good and evil between Supergirl and Lena Luthor, this is a look at their time in high school and more petty rivalries.
In this set, Supergirl must team up with Poison Ivy to defend the school from Lena and her hypnotized Kryptomites. Poison Ivy can take care of things on the ground level with her motorbike, flying discs and pet plant while Supergirl can take to the sky to deal with Lena as he flies off in her jet. The battle scenes can get quite intense, with the laser pistols, the gripping claw on the jet and the chains. However, there is just as much to enjoy when the score has been settled. The large 30cm high build has swivelling classrooms, and a café so is a great base for other adventures as kids expand their collection with new figures.
LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Batgirl™ Batjet Chase 41230 Set
The Kryptomites are the main villain in this new DC Super Hero Girls LEGO range, rather than any one character. These odd creatures look cute and evil and the same time and are difficult to keep under control, especially when they keep going around stealing equipment. This is precisely what has happened in the LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Batgirl Batjet Chase 41230 Set. Batgirl has lost her ePad and desperately needs it back.
It is a pretty simple premise, but one that imaginative young girls can expand upon for a fun adventure. The best approach for Batgirl is chase after the Kryptomite with her Batjet as it tries to get away on the buggy. When she is in position, she can release the net, capture the creature and retrieve her possession. The stylish Batgirl figure is strikingly different to that of the other DC range as she is doll-shaped with a real face, mask and long ginger hair, her cute outfit includes a Bathood, utility belt and little wings. Even the jet is more colorful and stylish and offers a completely different shape to Batman’s menacing plane – although it still has stud shooters.
LEGO DC Super Hero Girls 41231 Harley Quinn™ to the Rescue Set
Adding Harley Quinn to this new set of pre-teen toys was always going to be difficult because of her look and her evil ways. The LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Harley Quinn to the Rescue 41231 Set takes some of the stylistic elements of Margot Robbie’s portrayal – such as the red and blue hair – and makes her more PG and cute. She still retains elements of the Joker’s girl, with her devilish grin and the design of her jet, but here she is battling to protect the local coffee shop from Kryptomites.
The Capes and Cowls Café is a brightly colored two storey build with lots of fun elements for girls to play with. It has an arcade machine, breakable window and even a cupcake catapult to use against these evil creatures. The opportunities for creative play are enhanced through the inclusion of a second mini-figure – Steve Trevor – who is currently trapped on the roof. Once the café is secure, Steve can serve up some coffee and pizza as a thank-you. Additional elements include a comic hidden behind the arcade machine, money to spend (or steal) and a net to fire from the jet to capture the Kryptomites.
