Now that most Star Wars fans have seen The Force Awakens at least three times, attentions are turning towards Star Wars Episode 8. At the moment, all we can really do is speculate on what might happen. Last year we had J.J Abrams tweeting from inside the Millenium Falcon to raise a little social media hysteria; this year things are probably going to be a bit more secretive. For a start, J.J isn’t in the directors chair, although he did express some regret about that upon reading the script. This time it is Looper director Rian Johnson taking control while Abrams remains in a creative consultant role. He has the chance to go in a new direction, but will he take it?

Who can we expect to see in the new Star Wars film?
There were plenty of characters in Episode 7, old and new, and it will be interesting to see who makes an appearance in Star Wars 8. There are vague statements that Daisy Ridley “may” reprise her role as Rey, but it would be very strange not to see her after that final scene and the time spent developing her character. That finale also suggests that Luke and R2-D2 should have bigger roles in the next film as we learn more about his disappearance. Fans, however, will be keen to see more of angst-ridden Kylo Ren as well as Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, both of whom had minor parts in Episode 7. There is also a lot of talk about larger roles for General Hux and Supreme Leader Snoke, which has led to speculation about the First Order’s retaliation against the Resistance.
Is this just going to be a reboot of Empire?
Unsurprisingly, there are already internet geeks writing critical blogs about how Star Wars 8 – The Last Jedi will just be a rip-off of The Empire Strikes Back. Many of the reviews for The Force Awakens focused on the similarities between this new episode and A New Hope because the structure of the stories, especially the Death Star scenes, were familiar. This leads to concerns about long sequences of Jedi training between Rey and Luke and Kylo Ren getting revenge via ghostly visions from his grandfather. There is no guarantee that Johnson will follow that formula with these reboots. Now that the creators have shown that a modern Star Wars film can live up to expectations and blend the old with the new, they have plenty of opportunity to showcase this in Episode 8 with a fresh storyline.
