The LEGO City theme is one that doesn’t show any signs of slowing down as players and their adventurous minifigures take the action to new parts of town and excursions to remote locations. There have been some interesting new additions to the range for summer 2016, all of which have an unusual element or two.
These sets are all very diverse in terms of the subject matter and the adventures that players can create, but they are also all great choice for a summer vacation project. Fun in the Park gives kids a range of summer scenarios to add to the city as they see fit, the new gas station is ideal for filling up minifigures’ cars on route to the coast, LEGO City Airport has some interesting new arrivals including a summer airshow and the new LEGO Volcano Explorers sub-theme turns up the heat with some cool science.
Three new LEGO City Airport sets bring more depth to this transport hub for 2016.
LEGO City Airport Cargo Plane 60101 Set
The airport of LEGO City is hub of activity and there is plenty more for air traffic control to negotiate than a few domestic passenger flights. A great example of this is the LEGO City Airport Cargo Plane 60101. This large green plane, with its big nose cone and impressive engine, is waiting to transport important goods across the state. The airport worker needs to make sure that are the packages are safely loaded into the cargo hold via the back hatch, that the hatch is secure ready for take off and that the pilot is all set.

The LEGO City Airport Air show 60103 is a set that is a must-have for any builder looking to create a great airport scene with some creative elements. For one afternoon, that cargo plane and the other passenger planes will have to wait their turn because there are some interesting visitors waiting to take to the skies. First up is the biplane, with a choice of male of female stunt pilot and its spinning propellers, for a few aerial manoeuvres.
Once they have landed, the mechanic and airport worker can guide it back to the hanger, refuel it with the service car or use the tools for a tune up. Then it is the turn of the pair of red jets for a synchronized display. With the biplane services, the workers can watch the action with a mug of coffee and cheer on the pilots with the walkie-talkies.

Some of LEGO City’s top scientists and researcher have been drafted to a remote volcanic region to study the landscape and the LEGO City Volcano Exploration 60121 Set offers the chance to hunt for interesting materials and object on a tough 4×4. The car comes in a bright shade of green with thick tires, lights and a big drill on the back. The volcano adventurer and worker have come across a strange looking boulder and need to transport it back to base.

Upon closer inspection, the see that there is a strange crystal element inside and they use the drill to extract it. They can then take the piece back to the lab for closer analysis. Jackhammers and small drills are helpful, but there are some assignments on this volcano that require something a little tougher to get the job done. The main build of the LEGO City volcano Crawler 60122 Set is the tough Crawler vehicle. This truck has large caterpillar tracks, a big cab for the worker and adventurer and a rotating jackhamer. The men can carefully drive this machine into place with the female driver following behind on the ATV.

The male and female volcano explorer have found evidence of crystals in the ground and need to extract the boulders to retrieve these elements. One team member can man the excavator and pull up the rocks and the other can man the drill to find the crystals. Then they need to load all the crystals into the create ready for the supply helicopter. Help the pilot to load the crystals into the cargo area and transport these precious material back to the lab. Also included are helmets and a pickaxe.

With LEGO City continually expanding with more districts, buildings and residents, there have never been a greater need for a gas station where all the citizens can fill up their cars and pick up a quick snack. The LEGO City Service Station 60132 is interesting because is a 2-in-1 model, which is unusual for this range. One set of instructions creates the service station where mechanics can work on cars, wash them and make repairs and the other creates the gas station with the pumps and kiosk.
In one scene the tow truck driver can arrive for an MOT, leaving the mechanic to put the truck on the lift and use his tools. The other scene brings a female driver in her small car. Fill up the car with gas and pay the shop attendant. The different instructions allow for six vehicle types and the set also comes with a bicycle, sign and mail stand.
LEGO City Fun in the Park 60134 Set
The LEGO City Fun in the Park 60134 set is one that made headlines recently for its diverse range of mini-figure characters in a range of situations. The set is designed to showcase all the different activities that can occur in the city park and they can be used in lot of different ways. The newsworthy model with that of the first mini figure in a wheelchair, but there are men of all ages and vocations – from the business woman waiting at the bus stop with her briefcase to the elderly couple on the park bench.
There are lots of park themed accessories that can be incorporated into different areas of a park and different stories. There is a women painting a fence, a mother and baby, a child playing soccer, children on play equipment, a hotdog seller, a man at a picnic table and a women with a lawnmower.
