Over the years, LEGO has created some impressive sets that lean more towards robotics, coding, and other digital tech. It takes builds in a new direction with a nice stepping stone between LEGO construction and engineering. But, some of the robotic designs can be better suited to teens and adults because of their complex mechanics and electronics. That isn’t the case with the new Mindstorms Robot Inventor 51515 LEGO Set, where younger kids can get involved in making a range of cute working robots.
The set lets children become robotic engineers with great designs and age-appropriate tech.
The appeal of this set for kids isn’t so much about the LEGO elements but the different technical features for creating engaging robots. There is a lot here to bring the robots to life and ensure that they will work as expected. The key element here is the Smart Hub with all the essential electronics. This includes the 5x5 LED screen, 6-axis gyro, sensors to help the robot get around, decent motors for mobility, and also a speaker for communication. There is also a rechargeable battery in the set so you don’t have to worry about powering the robots up. Builders then use the instructions provided to house these elements in the fun robot characters.
It is this use of characters that makes this set a better choice for younger builders than some of the other Technic or robotic builds around. Some of the more advanced sets are great for teens that want to learn more about detailed builds and responsive units. Here there is an emphasis on creating five different characters with their own attributes. These characters are pretty cute compared to other robots and have names: Charlie, Tricky, Blast, M.V.P. and Gelo.
This is sure to be a great learning tool for kids and parents alike.
The other great thing about this project for younger kids is that it can also prove to be a great bonding experience between parents and children. Parents can help kids with the instructions and assembly, as there are complex ideas and almost 1000 pieces to sort through. Then kids can teach parents a little about coding by introducing them to the free LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor App. This app, and the additional compatible devices, mean that the Mindstorms Robot Inventor 51515 LEGO Set is a set that continually adds value and lessons for all users.
