A new Star Wars film means a lot of new toys and LEGO sets for collectors and fans to add to their shelves and playrooms. For many it is all about the different ships that are seen in the movies because these vessels are so unique compared to any other franchise and play such an important role in the development of the stories and battles. With new heroes and villains fighting in new TIE fighters, speeders, X-wings and other vehicles, there are plenty of opportunities to build upon a collection and the following list of toys – many of which are from Episode 7 and a few coming from earlier films – show the diversity in space craft and the different scenarios that fans can create.
LEGO Star Wars Ships from The Force Awakens
1. LEGO Star Wars Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle Set
It is hard to say which LEGO Star Wars ship from the new movie will be the one to capture the imagination of the kids watching and end up on their list of must-have toys but a safe bet would be the Star Wars Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle LEGO set. It may be the ship of the enemy but our heroes need something to battle against in play and there is nothing quite as interesting and formidable as this command shuttle.
The ship measures at around 15x8x7 inches at its largest dimensions – that is with the wings extended – and this means that there is plenty of detail and opportunity for imaginative play. Load up the storage bays and weapons racks, let Kylo Ren or one of the many other minifigures climb into the cock pit and head off on adventure, showing off that unique extending wing function as you patrol the galaxy.
2. LEGO Star Wars Poe’s X-Wing Fighter Set
The Kylo Ren Command Shuttle is the ideal ship for our new villain and the perfect way to lead an army into battle, which is bad news for our heroes. The snow-planet is under attack from stormtroopers and other Imperial forces and it is up to Poe Dameron to help save the day.
Thankfully, players can build a fantastic 4x14x12 inch replica of his X-wing, straight out of episode 7, to transport him to the battle and fight off the enemy. Once the ship has been given the once over by the resistance ground crew and is ready to go, Poe and BB-8 can climb aboard, load up all the weapons racks with the spring-loaded shooters and missiles and set off. There is also space for a second figure, which is great cos the set comes with an additional X-wing pilot, and retractable landing gear.
3. LEGO Star Wars First Order Snowspeeder Set
Speaking of the troops and stormtroopers out terrorizing the snow-planet and fighting against the resistance, there is another must have Star Wars Episode 7 LEGO ship that brings this part of the story to life and helps players recreate scenes from a whole new angle. As Poe lets the missiles and studs fly from high up in his X-wing fighter, a tough First Order Snowspeeder is en-route to deploy more troopers and help the enemy win the battle.
This cool-looking vehicle is ideally suited to the terrain with its shape and hidden wheels and is no match for the crews on the ground as it has rapid fire stud shooters to bring down the Resistance fighters. There is also plenty of room for the three included minifigures – 2 snowtroopers and their First order officer – or any other character that may end up taking it over if the Resistance are successful.
4. LEGO Star Wars First Order Transporter Set
The First Order Snowspeeder is not the only the way that these troops can get around and if the First Order really want to call in the Calvary and overwhelm the Resistance then they can call upon the Star Wars First Order Transporter LEGO set. This transporter is a beast of a machine with enough space inside for plenty of troops and their weapons and kits.
Kids can see the fear in the eyes of other players as they bring this in and then unleash the surprise attack by lowering the ramp and letting all the mini-figure troopers charge.
In addition to this, the top can be taken off to see inside and offers easier access to the figures and accessories within. The set comes with figures of Captain Phasma, 2 stormtroopers, 2 flametroopers and even 2 resistance soldiers so there are plenty of chances for extreme battles.
5. LEGO Star Wars First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter Set
The starships of the First Order just keep on coming thick and fast with this new Episode 7 film and it seems that there are lots of different ways for the enemy to come after our heroes. Naturally there had to be a TIE fighter in The Force Awakens and this LEGO Star Wars First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter kit brings the iconic shape of the old Imperial army into the modern age.
This replica may not have the most interesting crew in the way of minifigures – just a couple of pilots a First Order officer and a crew member – but it really is all about the ship with its accessible cockpit, a rotating antenna that lets the crew pinpoint the location of the Resistance fighters and spring loaded shooters. Some will see this is the ideal model to play with in big battles but others will prefer to keep it safely on the shelf.
6. LEGO Star Wars Rey’s Speeder Set
Even when our new heroes are given a vehicle of their own in The Force Awakens, it doesn’t mean that they are going to have an easy ride. The Star Wars Rey’s Speeder LEGO kit is a lot of fun for kids that want to have a different kind of adventure because of the style of the vehicle and its accessories.
Rey is out riding across the desert at top speed, scouting the landscape with his electrobinoculars and storing whatever he can find in the storage hatch or side-mounted bag. It should all be nothing but a fun game as kids use the ship and other items like the buzzsaw to hunt for items but there is an Unkar Thug on Rey’s tail and he is armed with a crowbar. Rey’s only change to deploy the detachable sled and fire at the thug with his dual stud shooters.
7. LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon Ship
Perhaps the kit that is the most desirable when it comes to The Force Awakens LEGO sets is the last one to mention here, the consistently appealing and iconic Millennium Falcon. This is the ship that fans were hoping to see the most in Episode 7 so it is not surprise that collectors want to add this LEGO version to their collections.
This model recreates the ship in its current form and it has all the parts and details to ensure that kids can enjoy it as a toy as much as adults enjoy it as a model. There are 7 mini figures included so players can create plenty of adventures, including Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey, Finn and BB-8, and this means plenty of characters to load up the secret storage area, fire the laser turret, have a game of holochess on the voyage and send the ship into hyperdrive as the enemy approaches.
New LEGO Star Wars Ships to Add to a Collection
8. LEGO Star Wars Tie Fighter Set
As was mentioned above, when it comes to iconic shapes in the vast fleet of Star Wars vehicles, the TIE fighter is one of the most memorable with its odd hexagonal wing and small body. There is the new version to consider but there are others from earlier in the franchise that could fill a hole in a collection, such as the Star Wars 75095 TIE Fighter LEGO set.
This is actually promoted as being the “perfect flagship model” for those that are just getting started with their Star Wars collection because of its significance and the impact that the finished model has on the shelf. With measurements of 18.5x12x12.2 inches, this ship is a good size for showing off all the fine detail of the build; however, it is also designed to be played with too as it has an opening top hatch for the TIE pilot mini figure and blasters.
9. LEGO Star Wars Sith Infiltrator Set
For fans of the prequel series of films, which is more likely to be the younger fans than the older collectors, there are also some interesting ships based on these adventures that may become overlooked with Episode 7’s apparent return to form. One such example is the LEGO Star Wars Sith Infiltrator set, which is a complex 662 piece set with an interesting design that will stand out on a shelf and bring something new to a battle scene.
The ship, which is Darth Maul’s own starship, has folding wings, plenty of firepower to defeat the enemy and even droid probes. Once the enemy has been located, characters can board the Sith Speeder to intercept them! The additional bonus with this kit is that there is a great selection of minifigures to play with to enhance creative play – young Anakin, Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, Watto and R2D2.
10. LEGO Star Wars Slave I Toy Set
The final choice is another one that may seem a little random but is a great option because it too brings something a little different that buyers may not have considered. The LEGO Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Slave I Set is not your typical ship as it isn’t there to go into battle and fight the enemy but it does play an important role in the series, which makes it is vital addition to the shelf and a new tool in imaginative play.
The ship itself is unusual, colorful and fun to put together with all the different parts and hidden features, like the side hatches and rotating shooters, but it is the storyline that unfolds with the mini-figures that makes it special. In addition to Boba Fett, the Bespin Guard and the Stormtrooper there is a replica of Han Solo in carbonite to be transported in the cargo hold.
