There are plenty of sets out in the LEGO Disney Princess range that focus on Frozen in some way. This is no surprise when we consider the popularity of the hit movie. However, there are some concerns from parents that the building sets of all the castles and other scenes may be a little too difficult for some younger players. This is where the LEGO Disney Princess Elsa’s Magical Ice Palace 41148 Set comes in. This set aims to provide an “age-appropriate” experience for players between the ages of 4-7.
It is clear from the design and features of this set that there are limitations and it really is for a younger age range. The simplicity of the building project will offer no challenge to older children, yet there is the chance for younger players to build their skills and enjoy a Frozen adventure that is similar to other sets for older players. The comparisons to the LEGO Disney Princess Elsa’s Magical Ice Palace 41148 Set are clear in the use of features and design elements, it is just a much more stripped down, simple version.
This set offers many of the elements from other sets that young children may have wanted, just in a more accessible way.
The most obvious comparison here is with the creation and design of the Ice Palace itself. There are elements that need to stay the same in order for it to seem authentic, and it retains the grand shape, see-though features, grand entrance and snowflake spire. The finished build still reaches 18cm high, so it is still an impressive structure for collectors to admire, the pieces just happen to be bigger and easier to put together. There is also a slide, much like the other Ice Palace set and two mini-figures of Anna and Elsa. The other difference come in the accessories on offer. Instead of an Olaf figure or some Snowgies, there is a little polar bear cub to play with. Additional features with this set include the rotating fountain, treasure chest, skis, ice skates and a working snowball catapult.
In the end, the LEGO Juniors Anna & Elsa’s Frozen Playground 10736 Building set does a great job of bringing the magic of the bigger sets to that age-appropriate style that is advertised. It is a more childish story and simplistic build, but it is one that young children will love. The clever adaptations and cute details should keep them entertained until they are old enough for the more complicated sets.
