Many consumers may assume that the LEGO City building kits mainly revolve around the main services and industries of a major city – such as the police, fire and construction – but the breadth of the range means that players can expand their creative play beyond these more obvious horizons to embark on some interesting adventures. The Deep Sea series is a brilliant example because it takes players past the shore of the LEGO City Coastguard set out into the ocean. Here they can look for treasure and jewels in the depths of sea and chart new courses with their submarines and scooters. There is lot to explore and many ways of exploring it as minifigure divers descend from the impressive exploration base to the shark infested reefs.
Six Great LEGO City Deep Sea Building Sets for Underwater Missions
LEGO City Deep Sea Explorers Starter Set
As with most of the LEGO City themes, there is a starter pack for the LEGO Deep Sea series that gives players a great taste of the adventures that can be had in this environment and the potential of building upon the collection with bigger kits. There are three intrepid explorers in this kit, a deep-sea diver and 2 scuba divers, and they are able to head out on their remote controlled sub in search of ancient treasures.
By steering this submarine through the weeds and mastering the spinning propellers and robotic arms, kids can send the divers on the right course to find the chest with with the 3 gold coins and ruby. The deep-sea diver is well equipped to handle the difficult task with his suit and crowbar but his crew need to keep an eye out for the big shark that likes to patrol the waters for food.
LEGO City Deep Sea Explorers Exploration Vessel Set
An alternative starting point for new collectors is the LEGO Deep Sea Exploration Vehicle. This large ship is the perfect vessel to take new recruits and a strong team of divers out on ocean voyages and underwater missions as it offers transportation over the water, plenty of tools for surveying the landscape – such as the walkie-talkie and binoculars – and cabins below deck where the minifigures can relax at the end of the day with a mug of tea.
The team are looking for gold and if players are lucky, they can retrieve 16 bars worth from below the waves by launching the remote sub for underwater exploration. With this, the working winch and the large wheelhouse, the mission should not be too tricky for the crew and there is plenty of lifesaving equipment on board as well, so it should not be too dangerous either.
LEGO City Deep Sea Operation Base Set
Vessels like the Deep Sea Exploration Vehicle are great for short term missions but it is not viable for long-term projects with uncertain goals way out at sea. For this, players need the LEGO City Operation Base where a team of scuba divers, deep-sea divers and deep-sea explorers can find a great place to plan their missions and examine their finds.
The new recruits can be flown in via the included seaplane, which has a spacious cargo area and spinning propellers, and they arrive to find a strange domed structure with oxygen tanks. The hatch on the base opens to reveal a detailed interior with a control centre and there are also two submarines – one flatbed and one research – ready to take them on their first voyage. All they need to do is arm themselves, check the oxygen supplies and they are ready go hunting for the gold and diamonds.
LEGO City Deep Sea Explorers Scuba Scooter Set
Once this fantastic, technical exploration base has been established, a player’s minifigures need some great underwater vehicles in order to get around in the depths of the ocean and collect all that treasure. One of the more interesting options for daring solo missions is the LEGO City Deep Sea Scuba Scooter.
The included scuba diver minifigure can navigate their way through the water and seaweed with the help of this sleek little scooter as they search for the crystals hidden in the reefs. It should be a simple mission – just grab on to those gems with the scooter’s robotic arm and transport them safely back to base – but it is not going to be that easy. There a big octopus down there that also likes the look of that treasure and his long tentacles are causing problems. Scare him off with the harpoon and head back to safety before the diver’s air runs out!
LEGO City Deep Sea Explorers Submarine Set
The scuba diver with his scooter may only have a limited time until he needs to return to the base but those in the LEGO Deep Sea Submarine can take things much easier and go deeper into the ocean depths to see what other surprises may be hidden down there. This large, powerful machine has tilting thrusters to push through the water with ease, an opening hatch and a glass cockpit where the crew of three – two scuba divers and a submariner – can travel.
The team are keen to explore the large whale skeleton and recover the chest of treasure within. At this depth, players need to use the searchlight and robotic arm with care if they are to take the coins, ruby and crystal back to the base safely. They also have company down there as that grumpy shark is back and he does not like this strange submarine poking around.
LEGO City Deep Sea Explorers Helicopter Set
With the initial missions a success and LEGO City eagerly awaiting the safe return of the treasure, the LEGO Deep Sea Exploration team still need a way of transporting it to the mainland. Because they are so far off-shore, the best option for the divers is to get on the walkie-talkie and call in the crew of the Deep Sea Helicopter.
This helicopter is designed to travel at high speed, thanks to its twin rotors and powerful engine, and is the ideal way of transporting the crew and their cargo in safety. In this building kit, the divers have arrived at the surface in their submarine – with that pesky shark still around – and they have a collection of coins and diamonds to handover to the helicopter crew. Is the crew’s job to use the working winch to grab hold of the treasure and safely put it in the cargo bay.
