The beauty of The Force Awakens for many fans was that it brought a range of new, complex characters to the franchise while retaining its old charm. Not only did it reassure old fans, but it gave kids someone new to idolise. In Finn, we have a hero that is arguably more 3D dimensional than Luke ever was – a former Stormtrooper fighting back and aiding the Resistance. This depth of character means that there are plenty of opportunities for toy makers to create new models and bring every aspect of the character to the playroom or collector’s shelf. One such example is the 2016 LEGO Star Wars Finn building set.
Set the Finn kit up for an intense battle to try and hold off the First Order.
With the new 2016 LEGO buildable Finn kit, we see Finn the hero armed with both a lightsaber and spring-loaded shooter and ready to defend the Resistance. The reason for the lightsaber is, of course, to fight against Kylo Ren, although this figure will look good up against any First Order figure in this 2016 range, such as Rey’s former commanding officer, Captain Phasma. Having this choice of weaponry is great because it doubles the potential of the model for creative play – lightsaber battles are iconic but sometimes a spring-loaded shooter is much more effective. A nice touch with this model is the fact that not only is it posable, it has a “wheel-activated arm-swinging battle function” for a more dynamic action.
The outfit that Finn has been modeled in is also important when making this set appealing to kids and they have done a great job of recreating the design of the jacket he took from Poe Dameron via the paintwork on the different posable parts. Some may have preferred to see a fabric outfit, like those on the Rey and Kylo Ren models, but this does allow for freedom of movement, something that is vital if kids are going to act out their favorite scenes. This choice of outfit and the selection of weapons means that once kids have finished carefully building this moving model in all its glory, it is entirely up to them where he gets to fight and who he fights against. He may be an unlikely hero with his borrowed parts and backstory, but the specification for this LEGO toy and those moving parts mean that he should easily lead the Resistance to victory.
