Any writer working at their laptop on their desk at home has surely longed for a typewriter. There is still a sense of nostalgia and romance about this analogue method of creating the written word. The first draft of a novel looks more authentic on stacks of paper with real ink. But, they are very expensive and hard to make room. So, the next best thing for many of us right now might be the new IDEAS Typewriter LEGO Set 21327.
This new typewriter build creates a stylish and realistic-looking device that you will wish was real.
If you were to look at a photo of the completed Typewriter LEGO model, out of context, you wouldn’t think it was made from LEGO bricks. The casing of the device has a metallic look with the careful use of the classic mint-green bricks and the perfect shape for a vintage model. In fact, the idea for this set came from the machine used by LEGO founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen. There are then all the necessary keys, again with that mid-century style and a nice font. You also get to build the carriage and mechanisms for the keys.
The machine looks ready for writing a masterpiece and the brilliant thing about those cleverly crafted mechanical parts is that you can use the key and see them in action against the “ink spool”. This is a little piece of fabric that is new for LEGO make is the perfect finishing touch for adults that remember working on the real thing. As you type, the carriage moves and creates all the sounds you expect from a real typewriter. While you won’t be able to write a real letter on this, you do get from Thomas Kirk Kristiansen, a descendent of Ole.
Understandably, this 18+ set will prove to be a challenge for adult builders.
With so many small details and moving parts, it is no surprise that this is an 18+ model for more experienced builders. There are more than 2000 pieces in a build that is only 27cm deep, 27cm wide, and 11cm high. That shows the dexterity and patience required. But, the beauty and significance of the finished model make it all worthwhile. The IDEAS Typewriter LEGO Set 21327 is going to be a labour of love for a lot of writers and creative types once it arrives at the beginning of July.
