The LEGO DeLorean Time Machine 21103 Building Set is one of those nerdy sets that came about from fan requests and this means that the set instantly appeals to fans of the Back to the Future franchise. Neutral builders may think that the set looks simplistic, but it actually has all the right parts and details for a great adventure.
Marty, Doc and a moving DeLorean – what more could fans want?
The main build in this LEGO Back to the Future set is the car that sends the two heroes hurtling off into the future, or the past if you would rather make up your own time traveling storyline. This Delorean is as close as the designers could get to the shape of the real thing and there are some great moving parts that really add to the authenticity and the creative play.
Firstly, you need to check the engine and the flux capacitor to make sure everything is in full working order. Then, open up the gull-wing doors – just like the ones in the movie – to get the mini-figures inside. Once the time travel display has been set, all that is left is to hit the accelerator and hope you end up in the right time and place! This LEGO DeLorean can’t go as fast as 88mph but the wheels do fold up for a great hovering effect.
The design of the car is great but it is the extra details and accessories that really make this set a worthwhile purchase for fans of the film. To start with, there is a choice of two engines and two license plates for the car so players can decide which version of the car they want to build and add a little versatility to the stories. Other fun details appreciated by fans are the “shield eyes from light” sticker and the fact that the display says 1958 (a little LEGO in-joke). Last, but definitely not least, there are the two minifigures that come with building kit. Dr Emmett Brown is on hand to drive this time machine safely and Marty McFly is by his side in the passenger seat, complete with his trademark hoverboard.
It may seem simple, but the LEGO The DeLorean Time Machine Building Set has a lot of potential.
This set may not have a massive range of features and characters to play with but everything that is included adds to the feel of the car and the ability to act out scenes from the movie. With simple touches like the engine, hover wheels and hoverboard, the designers have captured the best of Back to the Future and allowed fans to take the characters and vehicle in new directions.
